Two days prior to the first atomic bomb test, physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer was heard to check out these lines:

In battle, in the forest, in ~ the precipice in the mountains,

On the dark an excellent sea, in the middle of javelins and also arrows,

In sleep, in confusion, in the depths of shame,

The good deeds a man has actually done prior to defend him.

Anyone know where it come from? It's complex by the truth that Oppenheimer actually knew Sanskrit and some sources relating this i say he analyzed it himself. I'd guess: v the Gita due to the fact that it to be a big deal in his life, yet I've searched some key words in a pair of various translations and also haven't found any kind of matches. Walk the over look at all familiar to anyone?

You are watching: The good deeds a man has done before defend him

Oppenheimer's own translations were regularly idiosyncratic and based ~ above the approach of his Sanskrit teacher at Berkeley, Arthur Ryder. I've searched with a scanned copy that Ryder's 1930 translation and found nothing the registers with any kind of of the words of the an alleged Oppenheimer part. This certain claim that Oppenheimer said this and also that it to be from the Gita comes from Vannevar Bush, cursed to a memoir about 25 year after an alleged incident. Probably Oppenheimer stated this to Bush; maybe he said something else and also Bush forgot it end time; probably he attributed it differently; that knows. But I don't think it's actually from the Gita.
