Penn State capped off its spring practice with its Blue-White football game Saturday at Beaver Stadium and showed off some of the program’s top young players, including a surprising performance from backup quarterback Tommy Stevens. The Blue team, comprised of starters and key reserves, blanked the White team, 26-0, marking a second straight lopsided spring game at Beaver Stadium.
The Lions had a big spring all around with names such as Juwan Johnson, Lamont Wade, Jonathan Holland and others all turning heads with their play in practice, then backing it up at the Blue-White game. Playing in this third Blue-White game, Stevens finally had the supporting cast of a starter and showed the big promise coach James Franklin has been touting since the quarterback arrived on campus.

Quarterbacks Trace McSorley and Stevens helped guide the Blue team to a 26-0 blowout win. Stevens led all three Blue scoring drives in the second half on his way to 216 passing yards and three scores, but individual defenders on the White team had good showings in Ayron Monroe (5 tackles, INT), T.J. Johnson (1.5 TFLs, INT) and Jarvis Miller (sack). Check out the official box score here.

On offense, Flounders' choice was obvious. On defense, a young defensive end made his presence felt. As good as Stevens was for the Blue team, Flounders might have been even more impressed with a young defense highlighted by big Blue-White performances from Shareef Miller, Jarvis Miller, Lamont Wade and others. Franklin has been building up the contributions of Stevens behind the scenes for the better part of two years. To this point, though, the jury was still out on who Stevens was and how prepared he could be to fill in for McSorley in a pinch. The Blue-White game started to offer some answers. Penn State landed the 12th commitment in its 2018 recruiting class is North Stafford (Va.) offensive tackle Nana Asiedu, a four-star prospect who ranks among the top 100 players in the country, according to 247Sports. Asiedu picked the Lions over Clemson and a host of other big-time programs, marking a huge recruiting victory for Franklin. >> Read more here
Asiedu was the first commit of the day, but he wasn't the last. He was joined just hours later by massive Muskegon (Mich.) offensive tackle Antwan Reed. The Lions got another true tackle prospect in Reed, who is massive at 6-6 and 320-plus pounds. Penn State again out-dueled other high-profile programs to land a good player who is a powerful run blocker with the footwork to thrive at tackle. >> Read more
The commitment of Asiedu came just a day after Penn State lost a pledge from four-star offensive tackle Chris Bleich, who reopened his recruitment Friday morning. Penn State has yet to confirm or deny a Lions247 report that starting cornerback John Reid could miss a significant amount of time with a knee injury. The Blue-White game offered a first glimpse at the junior on crutches and a bulky brace on his left knee. >> Read full story
Redshirt sophomore safety Ayron Monroe is among the contenders in a heated competition for a starting job opposite Marcus Allen in the defensive backfield. A forgotten name in the fight for time at cornerback, redshirt freshman T.J. Johnson showed he might deserve a longer look for a spot in the rotation. Johnson was pleased with his effort and said after the game he has been helped along by the veteran presence of Reid and others. >> Read full story
