After the year we’ve had, most of us could use a laugh, and Tulsa’s Loony Bin Comedy Club is the spot with weekly, socially distant shows.
The club is located near Woodland Hills Mall, and though it has undergone some interstitial renovations and logo changes, the laughs have remained since it opened in 2007.
Shows aren’t limited to a single comedian. They typically start with a 15-minute warmup from whomever is that week’s “emcee/host,” followed by a second comedian as the “feature” with a 30-minute set, before the headliner’s 45-minute set. The roster changes on a weekly basis, and the comics tour nationally. The last Wednesday night of every month is reserved for open mics — a chance to see local, up-and-coming talent.
Upon entering the Loony Bin, the laughter-seeking Tulsan is met with a waiting area and a generously stocked bar. Those seeking fortification before the show might order from a wealth of charmingly themed drinks, the most infamous is the aptly named “Lobotomy” — 32 ounces of vodka, rum, gin, tequila, triple sec, cranberry, Sprite and grenadine ($11). For $10 more, you can get a shirt declaring you’ve survived the drink.
After being seated patrons can order menu items ranging from popcorn ($3) to a basket of chicken wings ($8-$25).
The club is open to those 18 and older from Wednesday to Saturday, with shows at different times each night. Find the show calendar at tulsa.loonybincomedy.com.
