Young rebel leader Burhan Wani was a folk hero among his people and the news of his death spread like wildfire in Kashmir, bringing thousands of mourners onto the streets. Burhan Wani had become the face of the resistance movement in Kashmir and recruited many youth’s including educated youngsters, via the use of social media. He belonged to a well off family, but at the age of 15 joined the rebels following an incident involving his brother and security forces. Burhan carried a 10 Lakh rs reward on his head but roamed fearlessly throughout Kashmir, as he was loved and protected by the locals. In a video message sent out to the media, he even made special note of Sikhs in the area and thanked them for their hospitality and expressed his gratitude for the Sikhs.
