Indian-American Sikh Attorney Gurbir Grewal has been appointed as a county prosecutor in the most populous county in New Jersey.

Grewal swore in as acting Bergen County prosecutor on January 4, and is said to have been formally nominated by Governor Chris Christie. During the ceremony, Grewal said, “I want to spend my time here seeing how I can make this an even better place,” and adding he “cares deeply” about the county and is “deeply committed to public service”.

  1. Gurbir Grewal, a Glen Rock resident, is the first South Asian and the Sikh to occupy this post in the state of New Jersey.
  2. He will be succeeding John Molinelli, whose 14-year-long tenure has ended.
  3. He was nominated for the post by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie in 2013, but the Senate never scheduled a hearing on the appointment.
  4. Grewal was a former federal prosecutor, and has fought major white-collar crimes for the US Attorney’s Office.
  5. Most recently, he has served as the chief of the Economic Crimes Unit in Newark. Prior to that, he was the Deputy Chief of the Economic Crimes Unit and Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property Section.
  6. Upon nomination, he has been quoted saying that he hopes ‘to work to build on the reputation of his office and enhance it’.
  7. He was also sworn in as an assistant attorney general in Trenton by acting state Attorney General John Hoffman.
  8. Grewal completed his Doctor of Law degree (J.D.) from The College of William and Mary – Marshall Wythe Law School, and his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University
  9. Indian by origin, Grewal can speak Punjabi and Hindi.
  10. In an online profile, he has listed Bill Gates and Neil Barofsky as been his inspirations.
